Schwarz: Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t

Reaction from the coaches after the draw against Mönchengladbach

Mainz 05 0-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Sandro Schwarz: “I thought we played really well from the beginning until the end today and that we were good with our three central midfielders. We didn’t keep our composure well enough when the ball went loose to be able to create chances. We were sloppy two or three time in defence and Gladbach could’ve scored from that in the first half. We had our best spell of the game for the 20 minutes following the change of ends. It was a shame that Pablo and Hack’s chances didn’t go in. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t. The match became a real battle after around 65 or 70 minutes. We just needed to be calmer and keep our composure. It was the right choice to play it out from the back.”

Dieter Hecking: “At the end of the day, the draw is a fair result today. We mostly controlled the game in the first half, but we didn’t use our counterattacking opportunities well enough. Mainz put us under a lot of pressure in the first 20 minutes of the second half. We owe a lot to Yann Sommer for keeping a clean sheet in that phase of the game. We got back our grip on the game after that and we had chances to grab a winner, but that’s a common theme for us this season. We could have also conceded. It was too little for a European spot today.”
